Assessing the Reliability of AI Models to Support Decision-Making in Lung Cancer Screening
In this project, we investigate the real-world performance of AI-based decision-support models in lung cancer screening with low-dose CT. We curate a large-scale dataset containing CT images from a lung cancer screening demonstration project in Québec, Canada and enrich it with expert reference segmentation masks for pulmonary nodules. We employ this dataset to evaluate the real-world performance of AI models for pulmonary nodule detection and lung cancer risk prediction. With a detailed subgroup analysis, potential biases of the AI models across different technical data and cohort subsets are identified. We use the privacy-preserving digital infrastructure PARADIM for curation, annotation, organization and storage of the real-world data as well as for automated inference of AI models on this dataset. Through PARADIM, we also make this dataset accessible to other AI developers, providing a robust foundation for the reliable assessment of AI tools for lung cancer screening.
