You can subscribe to our mailing list if you would like to be informed about the opening of our application portal or the next open calls for MSc or PhD student application.

We are currently accepting applications for our 2024 cohort of MSc students (for students starting an MSc course some in spring or autumn of 2024) via the application portal until middle of June (deadline: June 17, 2024 23:59 AOE).
Please note: relAI MSc students have to be inscribed in an MSc program in computer science, mathematics, engineering, natural sciences or other data science/machine learning/AI related disciplines at TUM or LMU, so make sure that you apply to that in parallel to the application to relAI. Most master application deadlines are end of May.

The application deadline for our 2024 cohort of PhD students with positions funded by relAI has passed. We will accept new applications for funded PhD students in the December 2024/January 2025.
Submission deadline for the relAI PhD program was January 15th, 2024 (23:59 AoE).
Applicants who have passed our first round of screening were contacted for interviews in January / February 2024.
Offers have been made in March 2024.
A relAI internal call for associated PhD students closed on April 15th 2024. Reviewing will be done in early May.

In general we accept students based on the following prerequisites:

  • Excellent bachelor’s (and master’s) degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, engineering, natural sciences or other data science/machine learning/AI related disciplines
  • a genuine interest to work on a topic of reliable AI covering aspects such as safety, security, privacy and responsibility in one relAI’s research areas Mathematical & Algorithmic foundations, Algorithmic Decision-Making, Medicine & Healthcare or Robotics & Interacting Systems

You need the following documents/information for starting the application process:

  • Your CV
  • Copies of your relevant diplomas and transcripts (in case a degree is still ongoing you can upload transcripts to prove you will have finished by the time you join relAI)
  • Motivation, also highlighting previous experience in the field
  • Preferred relAI research area
  • For PhD students:
    • Choice of two preferred supervisors who are relAI Fellows, along with an explanation for each why the respective supervisor would be a good fit (illustrate with a thesis topic you would like to pursue if you have one in mind)
    • Names and addresses of two researchers who consent to be contacted for recommendation letters
  • Proof of English language proficiency: level C1 or equivalent 
    (also acceptable: proof that University degree was taught mainly in English)
