Assessing the Reliability of AI Models to Support Decision-Making in Lung Cancer Screening
Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT)-based lung cancer screening (LCS) of high-risk populations enables the early detection of lung cancer. In the German LCS program, the use of computer-aided detection software is required. The goal of this project is to investigate the real-world performance of AI models for LCS. We curated an evaluation dataset containing approximately 1,000 LDCT images from an LCS program in Québec, Canada. The dataset was enhanced with expert pulmonary nodule segmentations and detailed nodule characteristics. Following a model-to-data approach, we assess the real-world performance of AI models for pulmonary nodule detection. Data curation, pulmonary nodule annotation, and automated inference of AI models are performed on the PARADIM digital infrastructure. We also make this evaluation dataset accessible to other AI developers through PARADIM, providing a robust foundation for the independent, comparable, and privacy-preserving evaluation of AI models for LCS..
